Microwire Arrays (MWA)
The Microprobes for Life Science Microwire Array (MWA) is a simple, dependable, and cost-effective penetrating neural array composed of a matrix of pre-insulated microwires that are cut flat to achieve a consistent length and exposure area. This type of array has seen many decades of reliable success in all types of chronic implantations. While the electrodes are not as individually customizable or offer the same broad impedance range as the MEA, for many experiments they may offer the right balance of performance and affordability.
The design concept allows for a large variety of customizable configurations to cater specifically to the researcher’s application and experimental protocol.

- Up to 32 penetrating wires per array
- Comprised of pre-insulated platinum iridium or stainless steel microwires arranged in a matrix and trimmed flat to achieve a consistent length and tip exposure
- Each row within the array can be customized to a specific length
- Microwire diameter and spacings are customizable for different applications
- Microwires are coated with a supportive column of PEG carbowax, fully biocompatible and dissolved during implantation
- Can be configured for either acute or chronic implantation, and flexible cable options are available
- Custom connector configurations available
- Available in platinum-iridium or stainless steel
- Channel count (4-32 channels)
- Microwire layout (2×2, 3×3, 4×2, 4×4, 8×2, or other custom arrangements)
- Microwire pitch/spacing (250-1000 um)
- Microwire diameter (25 or 50 um, determines wire impedance)
- Electrode length (3 mm to 23 mm, with each array row customizable)
