Products List

The Microwire Brush Array (MBA) was developed by Microprobes for Life Science in cooperation with Dr. David Leopold’s Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health. The design concept, which features a large number of extremely thin microwires tightly bundled within a single Microfil tube, provides a unique approach for recording and/or stimulating small neural pools in deep brain targets. The microwires are designed to separate and splay out as they are implanted, minimizing the inflammatory tissue response to allow for extremely stable and long-lasting unit recording The design concept allows for a large variety of customizable configurations to cater specifically to the researcher’s application and experimental protocol.

  • Up to 96 individual microwires
  • Multiple wire diameters may be specified within a single array (typically 12.5 μm for SUA)
  • Can be configured for either acute or chronic implantation
  • Chronic designs feature a flexible silicone cable between the brush array and connector, allowing the array to be easily mounted in a microdrive
  • Custom connector configurations available
  • Overall shaft length can be specified between 2.5 mm to 120 mm
  • Available in Platinum-Iridium or Nickel-Chromium alloys
  • Steel-free and non-paramagnetic for MRI
  • Channel count (8-96 channels, typically 16, 32, 64, or 96)
  • Microwire diameter (12.5, 15, 25, 50 μm)
  • Shank length (2.5mm to 120mm)
  • Microwire material (Platinum-Iridium or Nickel-Chromium)
  • Fixed connector or flexible cable-mounted connector (length customizable)
  • Shank tubing material (Microfil (MRI) or stainless steel)
  • Shank tubing diameter (typically determined by channel count and wire diameter)
  • Connector (all common types and configurations, fixed together or free hanging)
  • Ground and reference electrode
